Day 14 (Super Bowl Sunday) - RunnerSpace.com/Travels Season 1

This morning we accompanied our host and her friends to Annenberg Hall, which resembles a dining hall out of Harry Potter. I tend to stick out from the all-freshman class as it is, and it did not help that I came in carrying a grocery bag full of condoms and candy. While I'm sure this appears to be very creepy, we were assisting Hannah in collecting signatures in a petition to a bill that would cut funding for family-planning health care. As it turns out, kids will sign nearly anything for candy and while most of the guys seemed hopeful of using prophylactics one day, the expression on their faces made it seem as though we were giving out Ebola. Calvin and I watched the Super Bowl in the basement of one of the upper-class houses which had purchased food and adult beverages. I talked at length with the beer maiden, Lecca Roberts. She is imposing at 6'4” tall. A former professional volleyball player, she decided to go back to school to become a doctor and was taking prerequisites at Harvard. She told me she had given up competitive volleyball because he heart was not in it. She had been pushed into athletics by her parents for as long as she could remember and was feeling burned out. It was disappointing to hear how sport had ate her up and spit her out, but I know it is a recurring theme among athletes. Her story is a cautionary tale of maintaining perspective and a balance in one's life that hit close to home. ---------------------
