Day 11 (Groton to Cambridge) - RunnerSpace.com/Travels

We stopped in Providence on our way to Cambridge to check out Brown U. As the student population was either in or between class, we had to entertain ourselves. After surfing ChristianMingle.com, a Savage Love for the faint of heart, Calvin hugged a giant bear statue and I tested the cellular service in an igloo—all in the same quad!

Note: If you ever find yourself with a friend or have the appetite of two people or a miniature pony, Gordito Burrito has a two-for-one special. “Sure Jon, but it probably takes place off-peak,” you would say. You doubt that we could possible found a legitimate deal. I shake my head. “It occurs right during the lunch hour,” I say as your mind implodes.

We had to stop by parking services at Harvard to pick up our pass for the next couple days. I wasn't sure we were in the right place at first because of the violent yelling occurring in an office next door. I did my best to act as though I hadn't noticed when talking to the man at the counter so as not to appear to eavesdrop. Within minutes of being there, Calvin thinks aloud “That guy's pissed.” I'm not sure how a booth operator for a parking garage screws up so bad to warrant that kind of tirade but I doubt it was as simple as giving incorrect change.

We ran along the Charles River from Harvard down to MIT and back. The path is in better condition than I expected considering some cars are literally buried under snow on some residential streets. There were a couple areas of deep slush that we had to run through, but we saw a snowplow driving down the path and knew the conditions would be more favorable tomorrow.

Our host, Hannah, took us on a tour of the campus. It is beautiful and almost uncomfortably so. There is at least one photo on the page of Calvin eating cereal in what appears to be a library reading room. And while I'm no stranger to questionable library actions, I am unsettled by eating the most basic of foods in a building that could conceivable house a Van Gogh painting. It's like showing up to the ballet with all the fixings for a weenie roast; it's nearly sacrilegious.

In a sugar-induced mania we joined in a staged snowball fight in one of the quads. Unfortunately planning for the event ended after setting the time and place, so students had formed in a circle throwing snowballs at anyone they saw. It did not matter what house you were in. It did not matter if you had teamed up with your neighbor. This was war, and war is senseless. People get hurt. Calvin, too, was caught up in the disorganized violence. He picked up a rather large boulder of ice and snow and threw it at the back of some poor, unsuspecting freshman. The kid had his whole life ahead of him.

We're now about to count some sheep on a shared cot in a Harvard dorm room that we will call home for the next few days. We're really excited for the press conference tomorrow leading up to the meet Saturday. We hope to have some good material on the event page by tomorrow. Until then, goodnight and good luck.
